Service to Others

Have you ever felt a nudge; something or someone in your subconscious telling you “You can do this”?

There is no way we can be perfect like Jesus, but we can serve mankind. Jesus didn’t die just for the lovely and worshipful, He died for the down trodden, the weak, the helpless.

Our job is to help those who need us. God puts us in situations where we can serve people. Jesus said to love our neighbor. Who is our neighbor? Our neighbor is anyone who needs a helping hand. Broadway’s Clothing Closet offers this help. A large majority of those we help are homeless, wanting only a change of cloths, a blanket or sleeping bag, and something to carry their belonging in. Others may have lost everything in a fire or have had everything stolen. Then there are people who just can not afford everyday purchases. Their children may need school clothes or someone may need clothes for a new job. We also help those who have been incarcerated and come needing household items to get started in a new life. Everyone has a story and some people just want a listening ear and a prayer. Our volunteers are there to help in any way possible.

We will never know the kind of impact we may have on a person’s life or what they have been through. Some may even have questionable character, but we are not there to judge. Our volunteers help them find whatever they need. We have a room for shoes, a room for women’s clothes, and a room for men’s & children’s clothes and household items. There is also a stock room where my job is to sort through donations. Unfortunately we are always low on men’s jeans ( waist size 29 to 38) and medium sized underwear. We also are in need of sheets and towels.

Volunteers are crucial for this ministry to work. I have always said we work like a well oiled machine. Our volunteers include Ann Kerr, Verlene Avant, Linda Hearne, Jan Roberts, Jena Banta, Judy Rostad, Mable Jarrett, Barbara Teel, Wanda Crownover, and Sandra Bennett. We are always looking for more help! Volunteers will know a month in advance when they will be working, the schedule is flexible and there is always someone willing to trade dates.

If you are looking for some way to volunteer at Broadway, just call Joyce Boyd at 806-786-8991.

The Clothing Closet is open every Tuesday 9:30-12:00 noon. Sometimes we will finish early. People needing items must make an appointment with the office ahead of time so we are not overwhelmed and our volunteers know who to expect.
