A Renovated Ministry

Student group from Atlas Campus Fellowship

As we renovated our campus center, we felt God tugging on us to “renovate” our ministry as well. Interestingly, almost all of the same principles applied. For example, with the campus center, we wanted to honor the building’s integrity and originality of design, so we exposed the large metal trusses in the sanctuary to showcase the beauty hidden underneath the old drop-down ceiling. Similarly, when we began to renovate our ministry, we wanted to return solidly back to the core of the campus ministry’s purpose throughout the years—reaching the “lost” of Texas Tech campus. A renovation was needed, certainly. However, that renovation wasn’t a tear-down of the old to put up something new; instead, we have tried to honor the best of the past and build on that with innovation and faithfulness for a new future.

This is why our ministry vision is “making room for restless hearts to find home with Christ.” This is fancy sounding language—beautiful, I think—but at its core, it’s the same thing that Broadway’s campus ministry has been doing from the beginning: finding the lost, making room for them to find the Christ who is always with them, and empowering them to make room for others to do the same. Of course we do it a little differently—2021 looks quite different from 1947 or 1967 or 1987 or even 2007—but the core of the message is the same. God is with us, and He longs for us to pursue our home with Him.

Because of the graciousness of God and the support of our congregation, we’ve found God using our ministry in incredible ways with this renovation of our ministry. Here’s a few examples of how:

  • Among our traditional students, the 20-21 academic year saw us lose almost all influence with Texas Tech students. This year, with renewed mission efforts on Tech’s campus, the make-up of our ministry is now a majority of Texas Tech students, with more new TTU freshmen plugged-in and involved than we’ve had since I’ve been a campus minister at Broadway;

  • There are multiple bible studies happening weekly with Texas Tech students who are not yet Christians;

  • Our International Student Meals have returned—and with a bang! We’ve averaged ~100 international students in our building for any given meal, and we’ve had no struggle reaching new students this way!

God has surely been gracious to us, and we are excited for how we move forward! We are grateful to have a congregation like Broadway walking alongside us and supporting us!

In Christ,

Gary Head
Director of Campus Ministry
